The Mendocino Wine & Mushroom Fest
Pam, Beachcomber Staff
If the mere mention of chanterelles and morels gets you salivating, consider a trip to a mushroom festival this fall. Mendocino County, about 90 miles north of San Francisco, hosts a Mushroom Festival, Nov. 7-16, with hunts for chanterelles, porcinis, morels and rarer varieties like the candy cap and hedgehog mushroom. Mushroom-themed dinners are offered throughout the area, along with mushroom cooking classes and a seminar on the healing power of mushrooms. For more info visit www.gomendo.com.

The Pygmy Forest
Pam, Beachcomber Staff
What is a Pygmy Forest? Stunted trees and shrubs caused by a complex ecological condition associated with underlying wave terraces and their unusual soils. The poor soil fertility and wetness of the soil restricts the growth of vegitation and induces a dwarf condition. Though short, the trees in the Pygmy Forest can be hundreds of years old. Jug Handle State Reserve features a 2.5-mile self-guided nature trail called The Ecological Staircase which explores five wave-cut terraces formed by glacier, sea and tectonic activity that built the coast range. Each of the terraces was uplifted from sea level about 100,000 years before the one below it. Plants on each terrace represent a more advanced stage in succession, indicating what the previous, next lower terrace may look like in 100,000 years. The lowest terrace consists of prairie; the second is covered with pines; the third supports a unique pygmy forest with knee-high trees possibly several decades old. Make it a half day trip to explore the interesting Pygmy forest.

A Special Guest
Pam, Beachcomber Staff
One Sunday morning while I was helping check-out guests and stocking the breakfast I walked over to our double doors that lead out to the ocean. I met a woman who was entering the doors at that time and she watched me walking about checking the plants and talking with our gardner. When she realized who I was she asked me, "Are you the owner"? I replied "Yes,... yes I am". She said to me, with her eyes welling up with a few tears, "you are so lucky", she then asked sincerely "Do you know how lucky you are"? I replied quickly, with my most heartfelt, "Oh yes, ..yes, I know we are very lucky. We are very lucky to be here". She then said, "The ocean is so beautiful and so moving", for her it was beyond words and she could hardly speak. She then told me how she was in Healdsburg and was hoping that the Beachcomber was the place that she wanted to stay. She remembered it from years before next to the Pudding Creek Trestle but could not remember the name of the motel. She was so happy to stay here finally. I shared with her how much I too, love the magnificant Pacific Ocean and I am never tired of looking at it and never take it for granted. The sheer beauty and spectacular changing sunsets each day are something you wait and watch just to see what is going to happen next. I followed her outside for a moment and then she left. The conversation was over but her feelings touched me and remained with me for the rest of the day... Just wanted to share one of those little magical moments.
